Hong Kong Jockey Club

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) are the only legal body that is authorised to run Horse Racing in Hong Kong which over the years as become the most popular sport in terms of spectators in the country. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a non profit organisation and any extra profit that they make goes straight to charity and it is the largest single tax payer in the whole of Hong Kong.

The HKJC have a legal monopoly over betting on Hong Kong Racing, and over sees football betting events and it receives grants from the government to help them along the way. There are a total of around 20,000 members of the HKJC and they put social and recreational events on these members throughout the year.

The club was founded in 1884 as an amateur body and stayed that way until 1971 when it tuned pro, the club used to be known as the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club during British rule but the Royal was dropped when sovereignty was handed back to China in 1996.

The HKJC arranges and manages around 700 races a year between the Sha Tin Racecourse and the older Happy Valley Racecourse which is located in the middle of Hong Kong surrounded by sky scrapers.
